The Fight

Two months ago, Barb was diagnosed with Stage III Breast Cancer. Since then, I've been honored to be by her side as again and again she has taken on the most aggressive treatments without a second of hesitation. It is awesome to see her spirit and fight. When I grow up, I want to half as tough as her. Statistically, the #1 differentiating factor in cancer survival is the will to survive. The will to fight. And Barb has lots of it. It is a beautiful and inspiring thing. I wanted to document it. So we asked Barb if we could photograph and film her as she shaved her head–an act that is perhaps an outward symbol of all the inner battle that cancer brings with it. In these photos, Barb had already begun her first round of chemo and was feeling a ton of pain and nausea. It was an intense and spiritual experience. Barb also wanted to help people understand that it isn't just older women getting cancer, but it is also women in their 20's. She found her cancer because someone else posted their diagnosis on Facebook. So maybe these pictures and the film we will release soon will help save someone else's life, just as someone saved hers. Thank you for your prayers. Soon cancer will be a disease of the past.

You ARE doing this. I am so glad I got to see you when I was in Richmond. I have been thinking and praying for you ever since. Keep doing exactly what you're doing--we are all learning from you! And Brig--thank you for taking such good care of her.
